Poetry Saved Our Lives

Poetry Saved Our Lives is an eight-week spoken word series for teens to explore their creative voices and make friends. Develop your writing, poetry and stories with a supportive and experienced coach.

Coach Joshua "Scribe" Watkis leads a series of workshops on poetry and spoken word. Develop your art and showcase your talents. Joshua “Scribe” Watkis has performed across Canada, opening for Hip-Hop legends like Saukrates and The Roots. Joshua is a former Canadian Festival of Spoken Word national champion, author, arts educator and music producer.

Participants make sushi rolls using ingredients prepared by Chef Sang and eat their own creations. A brief history of sushi, its origins and eating etiquette will also be shared.

This program is for teens, ages 13-17.

The classic game of SCRABBLE gets a whole new twist on a board that spans the entire auditorium. Whether you’re spelling “cat” and “dog,” or “antidisestablishmentarianism,” you’re sure to have some fun.

 

This is a Youth Hub program for teens only.

Toy Hacking Workshop

Toy Hacking Workshop

Join us to learn about the Makers Making Change program and to switch-adapt toys. Participants will learn how to take apart a toy, identify buttons that control the toy, and solder in jacks that will allow someone to control the toy with an assistive switch. All switch-adapted toys will be donated to children with disabilities across Ontario by Neil Squire’s Makers Making Change program to make play accessible to families with children with disabilities across Canada. Volunteer hours can be provided to participants upon request.

In collaboration with the Toronto Public Library, discover how to safely get involved as a volunteer. Learn where to search for opportunities and how to find the best match for your needs and goals - including volunteering virtually from home, or in person with a group or organization. This session will also explore how volunteering helps build your resume and supports your job search.

You’ll also discover thousands of free online resources through the Toronto Public Library to help you learn more about the city, make community connections, and access other helpful support services. This session is great for youth, newcomers and seniors and anyone who wants to make a positive impact on our city, or improve or learn new skills.

Please note:  You will not receive volunteer hours for attending this session.
