Join Toronto oncologist and author, Dr. Charles Hayter, as he pulls back the curtain on his life as a cancer doctor and his experience dealing with his father’s cancer and death. He’ll read from and discuss his recent book Cancer Confidential. This event will be of interest to anyone whose life has been touched by cancer, whether as a patient, family member, or caregiver.

  • May Artist: Manet- In this acclaimed film, focussing on the sell-out exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, we ask just who was Édouard Manet - the ‘Father of Modern Art’.We enjoy exclusive access to the show as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the exhibition’s preparation.

The subject matter of Fahrenheit 451, the 1953 dystopian novel has led to it being challenged and/or banned at least 10 times since 1992. This talk discusses the age of censorship and some very big issues that society will need to wrestle with.

Presented by Paul Keen, Associate Dean, Professor at Carleton University.

This event is part of Toronto Public Library’s Great Books Lecture Series, made possible through a gift from the Ann Thoburn Fund. The lecture series, delivered by academics, explores humanity, diverse views and possibilities on literary titles as they relate to the series’ annual theme. The theme of Toronto Public Library's 2024 Great Books Lecture Series is Books as Battlefields and is curated by Paul Chafe of Toronto Metropolitan University.

Get some tips and learn techniques for successful growing. At the end of the demo, vegetable seeds or seedlings will be given out to attendees, while supplies last. 

About the presenter: Toronto Master Gardeners have been advising and helping solve problems for Toronto gardeners since January 1988. Toronto Master Gardeners have successfully completed university horticultural studies and must meet ongoing continuing education requirements to make sure that advice to gardeners is based on current horticultural knowledge.

Boost Your Brain Health: From Dementia Risk Reduction to Family Caregiving

Join us for an afternoon all about brain health and healthy aging, presented by Baycrest. Take part in an interactive panel discussion and live demonstrations all about brain health. Explore the latest research about modifiable risk factors for dementia, tools to promote healthy aging, and what to expect after a dementia diagnosis, including innovations in caregiving.

SCHEDULE:

1 pm: Doors open.

1:30 to 3 pm: Public panel discussion and Q&A with:

  • Dr. Nicole Anderson, Associate Scientific Director of Baycrest’s Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness, and Senior Scientist at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute
  • Peter Clutterbuck, co-lead of the Seniors Work Group, Oakwood Vaughan Community Organization
  • Dr. Rosanna Olsen (moderator), Senior Scientist at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute
  • Dr. Tarek Rajji, Senior Scientist and Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)
  • Tyler Redublo, Analyst, Innovation Office, Centre For Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI)
  • Dr. Adriana Shnall, Program Director of Baycrest’s Koschitzky Centre for Innovations in Caregiving

3:00 to 4:30 pm: Have a snack, browse interactive booths focusing on different aspects of healthy aging, take home resources and watch demonstrations of cutting-edge research projects at Baycrest.

Light refreshments will be provided. 

Registration for the panel portion of this event is now full; drop-ins and waitlisted attendees will be admitted as space permits, just before 1:30pm.
